 | The hostel is a turn of the century New England farmhouse that has been totally renovated in 1995, when we first opened. It is located in the Mount Washington Valley and surrounded by over 750,000 acres of National Forest. The area provides a natural playground for climbers, skiers, mountain bikers, and hikers alike. Recreational activities abound year round. The area also attracts bargain hunters with its tax free shopping and large variety of outlet stores and antique shops. Remember how you felt the first time you traveled abroad or journeyed to a different part of the USA? You were probably excited. Energized. Maybe a little bit scared. The fact is, when we're exposed to new people and cultures different from our own, we change in ways that impact us for the rest of our lives.
Hostelling is a special kind of travel. Unlike hotels that tend to be isolating and often generic in what they offer, hostels foster meaningful, affordable travel. At the White Mountains Hostel we give people the chance to have life-changing experiences through travel using our hostels and programs. | | History of Hostelling
The founder of the youth hostel movement was Richard Schirrmann, a German school teacher. While assigned to a coal mining area, he became conscious of the impact of the industrial revolution on his students' health and welfare. Concerned about their environment, he began taking his students on weekend field trips into the countryside for the fresh air and interaction with nature - in effect a "wandering school." School buildings, empty on weekends, were used for overnight accommodations. The concept of a network of student "youth hostels" was developed from this experience.
Isabel and Monroe Smith of the United States attended the 1933 conference and opened the first youth hostel a year later in Northfield, Massachusetts. Within a year, a network of more than 30 hostels was operating throughout New England. Today, there are 4.5 million active members, an "alumni" of hundreds of millions, and an operating network of 5,000 hostels recording 31 million overnights annually in more than 70 countries. |

The area also attracts bargain hunters with its tax free shopping and large variety of outlet stores and antique shops | | Directions | Driving from the SOUTH: Take Route 95 North to 16 North (near Portsmouth, NH). Take 16 North all the way into the village of Conway. At the first traffic light make a left onto Washington Street. We are the second house on the left with white siding and black shutters. OR from Route 93 North, take exit 23 (Route 104 East) to 25 North to 16 North and proceed as instructed above once you are on Route 16 heading North. (or the fourth building on the left, there are two commercial building before the two houses on the left.)
Driving from the NORTH: From 91 South get onto 93 South. Take 93 South to Route 302 East. Continue on 302 right through North Conway, and when 302 splits to the left, continue straight instead, staying on Route 16. You will pass an Army/Navy store on your left and at the next traffic light make a right, then immediately another right onto Washington Street. We are the second house on left. (or the fourth building on the left, there are two commercial building before the two houses on the left.)
Driving from the EAST: Take Route 302/113 West through Fryeburg, Maine and into New Hampshire. 302 and 113 will split at the first red light. Stay on Route 113 to the second red light. Make a right onto Washington Street. We are the second house on left. (or the fourth building on the left, there are two commercial building before the two houses on the left.) | | Transportation | Concord Trailways buses leave Logan airport and South Station in Boston, and arrive in Conway, NH, via Concord and Manchester. Schedules vary during the year, so plan ahead. From the Conway bus stop, make a right onto Main St. and walk to the first traffic light. Make a left onto Washington Street and we are the second big white house on the left. Ten minute walk. | | Airport | Portland, ME (75 Miles). You must rent car from this point. There is no bus service from here to Conway, NH. If are flying into area and need bus service, we recommend flying into Login Airport in Boston, MA. Then taking Concord Trailways into Conway. |

Our Hostel has five dorm rooms, with six bunks in each room and four private rooms that can accommodate up to 5 people. All linens are provided and please, no sleeping bags. You may bring your own towels, or rent from us, and remember that we ask you to leave your shoes at
the entrance, so you may want to bring slippers
We have a living room and dining room with comfortable furniture, and a cozy library with free WiFi Internet access to those bringing laptops. In the summer you can eat outside on our back lawn watching the sunset over the Moat Mountains or sit on one of our cozy porch benches. A house phone is available for free local calls, or you may use your calling card for long distance
We also have a newly equipped self-catering kitchen you may use, which includes two refrigerators, two stoves & ovens, a microwave and all the dishes and kitchen utensils you'll need. We have a few barbeques out in the summer, too
Like most hostels, our bathrooms are in the hall. We have one private bathroom that is wheelchair accessible, a large mens room and a large womens room. None of our bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms. We pride ourselves in the cleanliness throughout the hostel. | Amenities
